Queanbeyan - Molonglo Rivers Heritage walk

Several centuries old Apple Box Gum in Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery.

An autumn walk along the Molonglo River and Queanbeyan River offered more than scenic views — it highlighted decades of cross-border conservation work. Hosted by Molonglo Conservation Group and Queanbeyan Landcare, the heritage walk explored efforts to tackle erosion, restore native habitat, and improve river health where the rivers meet. Participants saw thriving native plantings, mini forests, and ongoing woody weed removal projects on both sides of the border. A highlight was the historic Riverside Cemetery, established in 1842 and home to an Apple Box tree that is several centuries old. Walkers also learned how major floods have repeatedly reshaped the river corridor and why ongoing maintenance is essential. Discussions highlighted the challenge of invasive species, including Robinia pseudo acacia and Box Elder, which continue to threaten river ecosystems downstream.

Acknowledgement of Country

The Molonglo catchment, crossing the NSW/ACT border, overlaps with a mix of traditional Aboriginal cultural boundaries and lines of connection, and statutory Aboriginal Land Council boundaries. The history of Aboriginal people is a living history and, in the present day, the NSW region is defined by Ngunawal traditional boundaries (spelt Ngunnawal by some clan groups and the ACT Government), traditional boundaries of the Gundungurra, Dharawal, Yuin, Ngarigo Aboriginal communities and the statutory boundaries of the Ngambri Aboriginal Land Council. In the ACT there are currently four Representative Aboriginal Organisations – Buru Ngunawal Aboriginal Corporation, Mirrabee, King Brown Tribal Group, and Ngarigo Currawong Clan. We acknowledge all Aboriginal custodians of this region. We acknowledge and respect their continuing culture and the contribution they make to the life that is within and around the Molonglo catchment.
