THE PAST 50 YEARS INFORMING THE NEXT 50

The Friends of Black Mountain ran the Black Mountain Symposium on 24–25 August 2018. The symposium theme—The past 50 years informing the next 50—reflected the objectives defined for the event:

  • to collate and synthesise known information about the cultural history and natural values of the area

  • to provide an up-to-date picture of its current biodiversity and ecology

  • if possible, to track changes in its biota and environment over the last 50 years and determine the management implications for the next 50

  • to better understand the importance of the area and how to maintain its values into the future

The impetus for the symposium was the 50th anniversary, in July 2020, of Black Mountain being declared a reserve to protect its natural values.

Detailed information about the symposium, including the program, speakers, themed walks, walk leaders and background papers can be found in the Proceedings.

Hard copies of the Proceedings will also be lodged in various libraries in Canberra including the National Library of Australia, ACT Heritage Library, Australian National Botanic Gardens Library and the ANU Hancock Library.
